I Wasn’t There

Announcing a new series of LADA screening programmes drawing on the large holdings of performance documentation in our Study Room.

The power of performance often lies in ‘being there’, but what happens if you weren’t there? There are many performances that will never be repeated for all kinds of reasons, but which deserve to be seen by new generations of audiences and artists. In an attempt to give a ‘sense of occasion’ to the viewing of performance documentation, I Wasn’t There is a programme of fortnightly screenings of documentation curated by LADA.

The first series of screenings relates to LADA’s Restock, Rethink, Reflect Three project on Live Art and Feminism and will engage with feminist performance practices from around the world, including work by Nao Bustamante, Bobby Baker, Susan Lewis, Karen Finley and many more.

The final screening will take place on Monday 24th March, capacity is strictly limited so please reserve a place by emailing [email protected]

Past screenings in the series:

As Seen On TV, showed documentation and to camera work by a range of female practitioners who have worked with, subverted, infiltrated and taken on the worlds of television and broadcasting.

Just Like A Woman reprised a programme orgininally curated for City of Women Festival in Slovenia in 2013, part of the wider Just Like A Woman programme which considered the performance of gender. The screening also included footage from other artists curated in the Just Like A Woman programme.

First Ladies showed performance documentation from North American female artists from the 1980s to the present day including Lois Weaver, Johanna Went and Julie Tolentino.

Girls Aloud looked at some key female British artists from 1990 to the present day featuring performance work by Marcia Farquhar, Rajni Shah, Kira O’Reilly, Grace Surman, Curious and many more.

These free events take place at 7pm in LADA’s Study Room.
