Situated in the Garrett Centre in Bethnal Green, LADA’s Study Room is our core resource. The Study Room is a free, open access research facility used by artists, students, curators, academics, arts professionals, and other curious folk to view artists’ work, read publications, undertake research projects, find out general information about Live Art, opportunities and networks.
The Study Room houses one of the largest publicly accessible libraries of Live Art related videos, DVDs and publications in the world and for many people the resource is one of the only opportunities to view documentation of performances that they were unable to experience ‘live’.
The Study Room is accessible generally by appointment during LADA’s opening hours.
Visit the Study RoomLADA frequently hosts research residencies in the Study Room, some as part of wider LADA programmes and initiatives, such as through our Swiss Live Art project and LADA’s Thinker-in-Residence scheme, and others in responses to requests from artists and researchers to undertake enquiries into key themes, practices, histories or artists. These residencies are typically self-directed and self-funded.
Given the nature of LADA’s space, residencies at LADA are oriented around research, reading, writing and watching, rather than making.
Residents are welcome to include Study Room Residencies as part of wider funding bids, and LADA is able to supply letters of support and indicative in-kind costings to prospective residents.
We ask each resident to write a short report at the end of their residency reflecting on, and offering feedback about, their experience at LADA. Our team will be on hand to advise on this.
As a minimum, a residency will involve:
Residencies may also involve:
There is no application process for LADA’s Study Room residencies and, like all of LADA’s programmes and resources, they are free to participate in.
If you are interested in spending dedicated time in the Study Room, we invite you to write to us with information about your project and the ideal timeline for your residency. You may also write to us with any questions about the residencies.
Residencies are scheduled for a mutually agreeable period, and their availability depends upon LADA’s capacity to host.
