Desk Scheme – Open Call Closed

LADA is thrilled to be re-launching our Desk Scheme!

Our space in Bethnal Green offers us the opportunity to provide subsidised desk space for up to five artists, producers, curators, researchers and writers. This scheme has previously accommodated lots of London-based or visiting creatives and helped build lasting local, national and international relationships and networks.

A comfortable, flexible desk space is available and includes the following benefits:

  • access to LADA’s Study Room,
  • Wi-Fi provision,
  • heating,
  • lift access and accessible toilet,
  • access to printer and scanner,
  • access to kitchen (with microwave, hob, kettle, other amenities),
  • free tea and coffee supplies (B.Y.O. milk),
  • use of LADA’s mailing address,
  • access to LADA staff for advice and other support,
  • networking with other artists, producers, curators, researchers and writers,
  • first to hear about LADA events and activities,
  • a 20% discount on any Unbound purchases.

Subject to availability and timing, space may also be made available for meetings and gatherings. We do not offer landline telephone access.

Please note that this scheme is fully dedicated to supporting work that benefits the Live Art sector and/or experimental contemporary culture.

BULLYACHE is a queer, working-class music duo and dance company from Jacob Samuel and Courtney Deyn. Think Pina Bausch cosplaying as Dua Lipa in their parents’ makeup, performing their albums as theatre works. ‘The dynamic collaborative duo’s approach to blending multi-genre music styles with visual art, dance and costume design is boundary pushing both creatively & culturally’ (Barbican). BULLYACHE’s work is a melodramatic, deconstructed pageant of exhaustion. Faggotry, pop music, slutty Nijinsky and commercial dancing. It’s how they relate to the world, two working-class artists making live music videos about their life. As Kim Cattral said once ‘We just have a rhythm you know… he sort of feels me out and I feel him out and uh, we go for it’. Since BULLYACHE started at the end of the pandemic they have become artists in residence at the Barbican, Britten Pears, Birmingham University. They have been supported by Arts Council England, Fabric, Sound and Music, Bold Tendencies, Artsadmin, Abderrahim Crickmay and the Genesis Foundation amongst others.

Delaine Le Bas is a cross disciplinary artist creating installations, performance, text works, photography and film. She was born in Worthing in 1965 and studied at Saint Martin’s School of Art. Delaine was one of the sixteen artists who were part of Paradise Lost: The First Roma Pavilion in Venice Biennale in 2007. She created the project Romani Embassy in 2015 as a response to the lack of will shown across Europe towards Roma, Gypsies and Travellers. In 2019 she was part of FutuRoma at Venice Biennale, designing costumes for Rewitching Europe and creating the installation and performance Witch Hunt III that included an 8-metre-tall goddess. Her work has been featured in the Gwangju Biennale (2012); Critical Contemplations in Tate Modern (2017); ANTI – Athens Biennale (2018); Berlin Biennale (2020); as well as in the solo exhibition Incipit Vita Nova. Here Begins The New Life/A New Life Is Beginning at Secession, Vienna (2023). Delaine has also worked with her late husband, the artist Damian Le Bas, on the series of installations Safe European Home? (2011-2017). In 2017 they produced the stage artworks and costumes for Roma Armee at Gorki Berlin, and in 2023 the objects relating to their shared life and experiences were presented in the House of Le Bas installation at the Whitechapel Gallery. One of Delaine’s most recent commissions was for Radical Landscapes for Tate Liverpool (2022). In 2023, she performed tHIS iS nOT vaLENCIA oRange oR caRmEN with Lincoln Cato at the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern as part of the exhibition popular, which also featured Delaine’s ongoing installations and performances Witch Hunt.

Gareth Llŷr Evans (he/him) is a Lecturer in Theatre and Performance at the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, Aberystwyth University, where he is also the scheme coordinator for the BA Drama and Theatre degree. Since 2018, he has been a theatre critic for The Guardian, mostly reviewing performances in Wales but also the South West, the West Midlands, and on occasion in Berlin. Gareth is currently on a period of research leave from his academic post, and is taking part in the Desk Scheme to work on two different research projects. The first examines the dramaturgical and political affects of English-language surtitles within minority-language performances, and the second is the beginning of a larger project that seeks to examine the convergences between performance criticism and notions of expertise, performance literacy, and radical democracy.

"I have really benefited from the desk space and have fallen in love with the space and the nurturing LADA has given me over the time I have been there."
