Pain in Soul is the catalogue of a solo exhibition of He Chengyao’s work at Shangahi Zendai Mueum of Modern Art in September 2007. This richly illustrated bi-lingual publication includes documentation and critical writings around key performance and photography projects created since 2001, including Open Great Wall, 99 Needles, Mother and Me and Broadcast Exercises. The publication also introduces a powerful body of new photographic and video work examining issues of poverty and mental health in China.
He Chengyao is one of China’s foremost performance artists and one of the few female artists making challenging and controversial work.
