Description

Francis Alÿs, born in Belgium in 1959, is one of the world’s leading contemporary artists. After studying architecture in Venice, he moved to Mexico City in 1986, where he has lived ever since. Alÿs works at scales ranging from the humblest drawing to the creation of epic events involving hundreds of participants, in media including video, photography, painting and performance.

With an introductory essay by Mark Godfrey and comments on over sixty key works by Cuauhtémoc Medina and Alÿs himself, A Story of Deception features a dictionary of quotes from the artist as well as responses to his work from a range of international contributors, including artists, critics, poets and urban theorists.

Published to accompany the largest and most important retrospective exhibition yet staged of Alÿs’ work, this is not a conventional monograph, but, in the spirit of Alÿs’ wandering practice, more closely resembles a guidebook than an exhibition catalogue.

Mark Godfrey is a Curator at Tate Modern.Klaus Biesenbach is chief curator of New York’s P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center. He is the founder and director of Kunst-Werke, a contemporary arts complex in Berlin.

Contributors: Eduardo Abarroa, Francesco Careri, Carla Faesler, Boris Groys, Miwon Kwon, Tom McDonough, Laymert Garcia dos Santos and Eyal Weizman.
