Small Talk Call for Proposals – Open Call Closed

Deadline for applications: 31 August 2004

The Live Art Development Agency would like to invite artists to propose ideas for Small Talk.

Small Talk is an opportunity for artists to discuss issues that affect their practice – ranging from conceptual underpinnings through to support structures. Small Talk aims to open up dialogues around Live Art practices and provide a safe space for artists to network and talk together.

We would like to invite artists to shape and deliver Small Talk events. We are looking for artists to propose an evening that can involve discussion, presentations and screenings around current ideas and themes that are of interest to the Live Art sector.

We would like to hear artists’ responses to this call for proposals and are happy to support a variety of approaches to the brief. There is no set format for delivery and the event can be given individually or by a small group. We expect each Small Talk to be for a maximum of two hours.

We can pay a fee of £200 for each talk (inclusive of expenses and taxes) and offer £50 towards hospitality. We are looking to hold four Small Talks over the next eight months and will select artist’s talks that compliment the programme. The talks will take place at our offices in: October 2004, December 2004, February 2005 and April 2005. Our office has limited access, however, we are happy to work with artists to address access needs.

To propose a Small Talk evening, please write up to 400 words detailing your theme of interest, how it relates to Live Art practice, why it is a current concern to you and other artists, and any technical needs you may have, by August 31 2004. Also include a short paragraph about you and your practice.

Previous Small Talk events have looked at the question of Artists’ Platforms and Socially Engaged Practices. Themes for the future might include: Live Art on site – civic spaces, private homes. What kinds of sites are artists working within and what are these settings bringing to the experience and impact of their work? Live Art and commerce: do we enjoy corporate partnership or should we subvert the relationship between art and commerce?

Please email your submission to Hannah at [email protected] with ‘Small Talk’ in the subject line, or post to:
