Pins & Needles is inspired by the Scratch Video movement of creating lo-fi and spontaneous short films as a way of documenting overlooked elements of society and subvert notions of the artform. Using this method of making we will highlight difficulties in presenting work surrounding mental health and queer culture through those artists specifically affected by these issues.
This DIY is run in partnership with HOME Manchester.
Interested in using live art to create lo-fi short films exploring mental health and queer culture?
Pins and Needles is a collaboration between Broken Grey Wires (BGW) founder, Lizz Brady, and PROFORMA director, Chris Bailkoski.
This DIY will focus on queer and non-binary artists working across performance and live art, exploring mental health through a three-day production workshop. We will provide tutorials in spontaneous video creation using digital material created by artists to develop a collaborative practice with mental health at the centre. There will also be two presentations by Bobby Baker and Rachel Rowan Olive, covering mental health and LGBTQ+ art production.
The workshop aims to provide new skills for artists, a model of collaborative practice, a new approach to the open call process and a way of working regionally that benefits participants and communities that can be overlooked and underrepresented in cultural institutions and wider society.
The outcome of the workshops will be viewed and discussed between the group. Please note that all aspects of this project will take place online.
Due to COVID-19 this project will take place online, therefore artists must have access to editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro or the free alternative is Open Shot (the tutorial will be in Open Shot). If you don’t have access to software/equipment please flag this in your application and we will find a solution for you.
