LADA is delighted to be hosting Urinal Residency throughout July, a live performance installation in men’s toilets, devised and performed by Orion, better known by their drag name, Creature Cramps. The performances will use neo-burlesque, lip syncing, and genderfuck drag to make a point of occupying/taking up space within locations where trans and femme bodies are surveilled.
The residency will be followed by an evening with Orion and invited guests on 1 August discussing the issues the project raises.
In summer 2017, Orion created a series of impromptu performances that took place in men’s toilets within buildings where gender neutral toilets are not an option including The British Film Institute (BFI), Peckhamplex, Vue Cinemas, Hampstead Theatre, and Tate Britain. Following the launch performances at LADA, Orion plans to tour Urinal Residency to men’s toilets across the UK between July and December 2018 and is inviting venues to host the work as part of the continued fight for the option of gender neutral toilets across the country, and to raise awareness of the violence that takes place towards transgender and non-binary people in gendered toilets on a day-to-day basis.
“If we are not changing the structures of buildings, we are not changing the structures of our thinking. We want our spaces to reflect the nuances of the people who inhabit them”– Orion, Creature Cramps
Urinal Residency will lead to a petition from all the people that choose to engage with the project.
Please note: LADA's toilets are gender neutral at all times.
