The Live Art Development Agency works in partnership with artists and organisations in the UK and internationally on the hosting and facilitation of residency programmes. The aims of the residencies are to encourage different ways of thinking about and approaching issues of artistic and professional development, dialogue and exchange, and research.
Current and forthcoming residencies include:
Legacy: Thinker In Residence in collaboration with Tate Research.
Legacy is a one off initiative which provides the influential artists Anne Bean and Tim Etchells with the opportunity to undertake in-depth research periods at Tate and the Agency throughout 2009 addressing the legacies of performance in art historical contexts, examining the processes and challenges of archiving live work, and looking at their own performance practice in relation to these. From this, they will translate their findings into the creation of their own legacies, that may take the form of new artworks or publications.
Writer in Residence
The Agency has invited Mary Paterson to be Writer in Residence in 2009. Using Unbound, the online shop, as a tool and a provocation, she will explore the relationship between Live Art and online space. The residency will culminate in a piece of writing to be published and made available on Unbound and in the Study Room.
Artrole
The Agency has been collaborating with Artrole for the last three years to contribute to dialogues and cultural and artistic exchanges between the UK and Kurdistan-Iraq. In 2007 the Agency hosted a discussion with artists, curators and academics from the region, and in 2008 the Agency collaborated with Artsdamin to host a residency programme for the artist Reben Majeed. In April 2009 Andrew Mitchelson travelled with Artrole to Kurdistan-Iraq to meet artists in the cities of Erbil and Sulaymanya and also give ilustrated talks about the UK context for Live Art at both the Aram Gallery in Sulaymanya and the Erbil College of Fine Art. The Agency will continue to support Artrole in their forthcoming programme of events and residencies throughout the next three years.
International curators
The Agency will host a series of forthcoming International residencies offering curators the opportunity to base themselves at the Agency and build networks, meet artists, promoters and curators from the UK, and develop and deepen their knowledge and research of the UK context. In return UK artists and promoters will also have the opportunity to find out about the innovative ways that many international curators are working.
Study Room Gatherings/Artists Groups
The Agency is committed to supporting artists and their professional development and research needs through hosting a range of study room gatherings and artists group meetings in the Study Room. Artists groups use this space in an informal manner for monthly meetings and the space offers the group the opportunity to draw upon the resources from the Study Room for discussion in relation to their practice within these peer-to-peer support networks. When exciting artists, curators and thinkers and in town, the Agency often tries to host a range of small invited Study Room Gatherings to support and develop the research, dialogue and debate around some of the most ground-breaking a innovative practices, and the research that drives them forward.
