The Live Art Advisory Network is seeking proposals from emergent artists to take part in a London based mentoring project.
The mentoring project takes the form of two short Attached Artists Schemes exclusively aimed at practitioners from culturally diverse backgrounds*.
Background
For artists from culturally diverse backgrounds, and particularly those working with Live Art, there is still an inequity of provision for informed and specialised professional development schemes and many younger practitioners have expressed their desire to take part in artist to artist dialogues and undertake professional development initiatives specifically tailored to meet their needs.
The Live Art Advisory Network's Attached Artists Scheme aims to address these needs and continue our commitment to exploring new structures for artist led professional development initiatives.
How the Scheme works
There will be two Attached Artist Schemes. Each Scheme will match an emergent artist with an experienced practitioner/mentor for a period of 4 to 6 weeks. The programmes will take place from mid February to the end of March 2004.
Barby Asante and Keith Khan are confirmed as the mentors and have identified the approaches they would like to take. The Attached Artists will undertake a programme of activity that draws on the proposed approaches, expertise and experience of the respective mentors but that also directly responds to the needs and aspirations of the Attached Artists. The programmes may involve dialogues, meetings, reading and research projects, attending events, critical feedback sessions, trying out ideas and whatever else they may wish to explore together.
Each Attached Artist Scheme will have a budget for expenditure items that will be allocated by the mentor in consultation with their Attached Artist.
It is hoped that the Scheme will bring considerable benefits to both the Attached Artists and mentors and will contribute to the participants' confidence, skills and artistic and professional development.
At the end of the Scheme the Attached Artist and mentor will be expected to write a short report evaluating their experiences and the impact of the scheme on their practice. The Scheme is being approached as a model that could be further developed and participants' reports will inform this and any similar schemes the Live Art Advisory Network may undertake in the future.
Who is eligible to take part
The scheme is exclusively aimed at practitioners from culturally diverse backgrounds*.
The scheme has received funding from London Central Learning and Skills Council (LCLSC) via CreativeCapital (see below). Unfortunately, the conditions of the LCLSC funding mean that participants need to LIVE OR WORK in one of the following central London boroughs: Camden, Westminster, Southwark, Lambeth, Kensington & Chelsea, Islington, Wandsworth.
Regrettably artists who do not LIVE OR WORK in any of these boroughs are not eligible to apply.
How to take part
If you would like to apply to be an Attached Artist please send a short proposal (no longer than two sides of A4) which includes the following:
Participating artists will be selected by representatives from the Live Art Advisory Network, Barby Asante and Keith Khan. Selections will be based on the applicants' aspirations and the mentors' experiences and proposed approaches.
The deadline for applications is 6pm on Wednesday 11 February 2004. You should send your proposal to:
