A project with a focus on play and escape from everyday concerns for artists with practices and lives affected by health issues.
Led by Lucille Power.
Four sessions between May and August 2007 (exact dates to be determined with participants).
London.
Deadline: FULLY BOOKED.
The Project
From Life-Change to Dream-Space is concerned with creating a space in which to dream: dream about creative potential, practice and possibilities; entertain the seemingly impossible, impractical and ambitious; discard the everyday and dump the concerns of ‘reality’; and blow a raspberry towards the limiting.
Life throws the most unsettling things at us. What happens when everything we have taken for granted changes, is upended, is no longer relevant? It can cause us to totter unsteadily, as all that is familiar becomes defunct. We may find ourselves alienated from ourselves, occupying unknown and hostile territory, estranged from all we formerly held as precious.
Working with five participants, we will meet four times over four months, and communicate in the time in between via a blog set up for the project. Prior to each meeting, the group will choose an activity to do together, something new to most of us, with an emphasis on play, and escape from everyday concerns.
Application Procedure
The project is open to artists from any discipline, however priority may be given to artists working within the area of Live Art. Lucille will select participants who have been forced to have a career break, or are only able to work intermittently due to health issues. They may continue to be significantly affected, and may or may not identify as disabled.
Places are limited to five, and will be selected by application. Applicants are invited to send a short statement (maximum 1 page A4) explaining why they want to take part, including a short biography, artistic statement, and contact details. Please feel free to include any information relating to access requirements.
Your application should be sent to lipstickpower@yahoo.co.uk by 6pm Monday 30 April with ‘DIY 4’ in the subject line. Lucille will let you know whether or not you have been invited to take part by Monday 7 May.
About the Artists
Lucille is a live art practitioner, with a background in visual arts and dance. Her practice is cross-media, including performance, video, text, installation and sound. Her practice is largely participatory, and has become increasingly playful in recent years, encompassing magic, roller-skating, cake-decorating, and balloon modelling.
Her career as an artist has followed a different trajectory to that of many of her contemporaries. She has a long-term health condition forcing her to have a break of some years from her practice. She is currently training as a mentor for artists who identify as disabled, and treading the boards as a hit and miss illusionist with her large-scale, home-made, cardboard tricks. In 2006 she was mentored by Franko B through his mentoring scheme.
